INTRODUCTION
Hi! My name is Jo Hentz. I started my clowning career as a child (they called me Jo Jo the clown in grade school) but actually climbed into the professional costume in 1994. I volunteered to "fill-in" for a friend that had her partner move out-of-state. The reasons that I felt I was qualified were; I had many years of experience in art - ok, I'll admit it, I'm an artist. I had been an instructor at a local arts and craft store, some small (really small) theater - acting and makeup, and dressed as a clown for a couple of costume parties that I had attended. I thought that it would be a cinch! I mean who couldn't do it? All you had to do was put on a silly costume, paint a face on yourself and go draw on some kids' faces, right? Boy, talk about clueless! In my friend's terms "What an idjit!!!"
Well anyway, I woke up and realized that I had a lot to learn. (Now there's the understatement of the year ) But the jolt was a good thing. It compelled me to go on a quest. A quest for face painting material, among other things, so that I would be better prepared for the next time I went as a "Professional" clown. I started my quest with my local library. Now they really do have quite a bit of material if you do a thorough search. The books that I found were interesting, but unfortunately weren't quite what I was looking for. Most of the books were designed for the person that wanted to paint their children for costume parties or "dress up". I was looking for something that I could paint that was desirable, didn't take me forever, and didn't cover the whole face. What I was looking for, didn't seem to exist.
As I continued in clowning (now there's a whole 'nother story to that ) I stayed on my quest, always looking for that book that I thought was out there - somewhere. I've found some that came close in some aspects, but failed miserably in others. Either they covered the whole face, took way too long, went straight for the eyes, or were waaaay too fancy to be practical for "lines". So I told you all that to tell you this I never seemed to find that book. Close but not quite. So what I am about to share with you is a compilation of many books, many ideas and techniques, then adapted to my style of face painting.
My style is pretty basic. I want something that is fast, stays away from the eyes, doesn't cover the whole face and the only complaint I hear from a parent is that they didn't bring their cameras. (I always loved that one.) So anyway, everything in here should take you [with practice] under 5 minutes. Most should take between 2 - 3 minutes to reproduce on a child's face or arm. My kinda style quick and coooool! You should always remember that yes, you are there to make the children happy, but only happy adults invite you back. And adults hate waiting!
I hope that you will appreciate and enjoy this collection of my nine years of gleaning and growing, my favorite fast faces of fun (try saying that three times really fast) - my quest composition. So buckle your seat belt and keep your arms and legs in the car while the car is in motion Have fun!!! - Jo
